I'm a college student and I need some advice for a journalism career career. I love the entertainment industry as a whole. Video Games, movies, tv shows, celebrities, and music. I am currently in school for journalism and I just need help what kind of journalist I should be. I've already looked into entertainemt journalism and I live that. Writing articles/pieces about the entertainment industry looks like an awesome job. But what do entertainment journalists focus on. Do they just focus on being on the red carpet all the time or writing articles about celebrities all day? Do entertainemt journalists write articles about Video games, movies, tv shows, music, and other celebrity stuff. Should I become a freelance journalist? I guess my dream job is to write articles or do reports for ign in New York or another entertainment company with an office. Maybe a staff position?

Or maybe I should try games journalism? But dont entertainment journalist write about video games too? I'm a gamer and I would love to write about the newest games or movies coming out or do reviews.

Web vs Binary

In recent days, me and a group of friends was discussing the possibility on game-making. Everyone got excited as usual and now we are concerning about the commitment and don't let the initial exctiment overthrow us, because as I've read so many times that game-making groups dies at very beginning.

On our first meeting, we got a hot discussion on whether Web or PC is the best plataform. One of my friends were arguing that web technologies are better, because it would be knowlege that can grants us a job in the future and specially defending the HTML5, once that Flash is "a dead technology". Even that I hardly disagree with him (since so many websites like Newgrounds holds tons of flash games), I don't know if is it really a possibilty.

So, what about the binary?
One of the guys in the meeting said that it was "going backwards", that web games are more attractive for other people and no one downloads strange ".exe files" from unknown sites. And also for the same reason as mentioned above.
Once again, I said that it doesn't matter right now, because the main goal is to break the "first game barrier".

And the meeting ended as it is. Now, we are doing research, but this web vs binary discussing got me stuck on what is the best for the group and for the programmers (were I am included).
By the way, we are not thinking of selling. We just need experience and knowlege.

Thanks.

Hey everyone,
So first thing. I've spent the last two and half years testing games, and I love it. The studio that I am currently working for is closing, so I am looking for a new job. I have two offers at the moment, one of them working in mobile, testing phone syncing to servers, and the other is testing a video streaming website. Both of the companies have expressed interest but haven't given me an explicit offer yet, both have asked for my desired salary. The thing is, I don't know what is a fair expectation for these fields. I've been told that game testing makes less than other software testing, but how much? I was making 18/hr as a game tester. What should I ask for in either of these fields? Is there any positives or negatives to either of these fields?

For me personally I plan on learning to code and being an engineer for a shorter term goal with the hopes of eventually being a producer or project manager long term. Do either of these help towards these goals? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hello Everyone.

Nowadays the GLBT presence in games is becoming a common thing, with games like Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Persona and The Sims letting you choose a same-sex partner.

But I've got a question of opinion

How would you direct a story where the protagonist is GLBT with no choice of being straight and still be appealing for everyone?

I know this is a hard question to answer since there's still a lot of people that don't accept this "way of life". But still I would like to know your answer.

This is not a question asking for help, is more of a question to learn popular opinion.

When you want to design a game from zero, how do you start?

-From the beginning of the story?
-From an event that would be epic to experience in a game?
-From the looks of a character and then create a story around it?
-From a personal experience?

Example: I read somewhere that David Jaffe designed God of War thinking of "Epic Events" and then attached them together through the Story.

I would like to know your answers!

Hello there,
My name is Rebekah and I live in Australia.

I am currently studying a Diploma in Interactive Entertainment (Major in Animation), and I would really love to be a concept artist when I gain enough skills.

I have been drawing most of my life, but have been seriously drawing from the start of this year (i.e sketching environments, character designs of my own).

I was just wondering what extra steps could I take to further my skills/chances in the field?

I am planning on continuing my studies to do a Bachelor of Animation next year at the same University I am at now, but is there anything else I can do in my spare time?

Thank you.
